Xiapu N/O/P Expression Review

A production review page for newly added N/O/P character expressions in the Xiapu Chronicles visual novel. These pages are production tools turned public art — they show how facial expressions are iterated, reviewed, and locked into final configurations ready for use in the visual novel engine.

About This Template

In visual novel production, character expressions are not drawn once and done — they go through multiple rounds of iteration, categorized by emotional type (N for neutral, O for open/positive, P for perturbed/negative, and so on). This review page captures the moment when new expressions in the N, O, and P categories were reviewed and approved — a snapshot of the pipeline mid-production.

What makes these pages valuable as public works is that they reveal the craft behind the character art. You can see subtle variations between expression candidates — the same character, same emotion, but different eyebrow angles, different mouth shapes, slightly different eye treatments. The "locked" ones are the winners; the rest show you what was considered and refined.

How It Works

A grid of expression variants with annotations. Each cell shows one locked-face configuration. The grid layout lets you compare expressions side by side — scan horizontally to see how subtle changes produce different emotional readings.

Who It's For

  • Visual novel developers studying character expression pipelines
  • Xiapu Chronicles fans wanting to see the character design process in detail
  • Character artists interested in the difference between "first pass" and "locked final"

Highlights

Pipeline as Public Art Production tools that would normally be internal documentation are presented as a finished piece — the workflow IS the work.

Emotional Granularity The grid of subtle expression variations reveals how much nuance goes into making a visual novel character feel alive.

Locked vs. Iterated The "locked" marker on each final expression gives the page an arc — you can trace the journey from concept to commitment.
