In modern Japan, the human world and the spirit world sit side by side, separated by thin veils of belief, ritual, and old contracts. Shrines still hold living gods; yokai walk city streets in borrowed faces; and a land deity's power depends as much on the hearts they protect as on the sacred ground they inherit. Nanami Momozono, an ordinary student abandoned by her father, becomes the new god of Mikage Shrine after a chance act of kindness. She inherits a home, a divine title she barely understands, and Tomoe — a proud fox familiar who once loved another god and now despises the human who replaced him. Around them gather snakes, tengu, school rivals, and ancient demons, while everyday life at school collides with Shinto rites, familiar contracts, and a slow, stubborn romance that neither Nanami nor Tomoe is ready to name.
When her father vanishes and leaves her homeless, high-schooler Nanami Momozono has nowhere left to go. After she rescues a strange man from a dog, he names her his successor as land god of a lonely shrine — and the silver-haired fox familiar waiting there has no intention of serving a mortal girl.
A mortal land god must earn her place among yokai and humans alike while her fox familiar refuses to accept her — yet the closer they become, the harder it is to ignore a forbidden bond of love, loyalty, and found family that threatens both divine order and the scars of the past.
Nanami Momozono becomes homeless, then accidentally becomes a shrine deity. Her familiar is a fox spirit named Tomoe who has served the shrine for centuries and has no patience for a teenage girl who does not know the first thing about being a god.
