Emoji Maker: Custom Emotes From One Sentence

Emoji Maker: Custom Emotes From One Sentence

An honest emoji maker: Unicode emoji cannot be invented, but custom emote images can. What you get, the sizes Discord and Twitch accept, and a three-step flow.

What an emoji maker can actually make

There are two different searches hiding behind the same words. One is “I want a new emoji on my phone keyboard.” That is not possible for any tool: Unicode emoji are assigned by the Unicode Consortium, and a picture you generate does not become one. The other is “I want my own emote for Discord, Twitch or Slack” — a small image you upload to a server and type as a code. That one is entirely possible, and it is what this page is about.

The difference changes the whole workflow. A keyboard emoji is one glyph in a system you do not control. A custom emote is a file you own: one expression, one character, one square, uploaded once and used forever. The hard part is not generating a cute face — it is generating sixteen of them that look like the same character in the same drawing style, at a size where the mouth is three pixels wide.

Quick facts
What you makeEmote images and sticker sheets — uploadable files, not Unicode glyphs
What you needOne sentence describing the character and the emotions you want
What you getA 16-panel sheet with a consistent character, ready to crop
What it is notA keyboard emoji, a font, or an officially licensed emote pack

One character, sixteen faces

Describe the character and list the emotions you actually use in chat. The sticker-pack skill draws the whole sheet with one consistent design, so the set reads as a set.

✦Sticker Pack
Use a sticker-pack skill to make an emote sheet of e.g. a grumpy orange cat: laughing, sobbing, dead inside — then crop each panel to 128 px and upload it.

Why a sheet beats a single emoji

A single custom emote is a novelty. A sheet is a vocabulary. When the sixteen faces come from one drawing pass, the character keeps the same eyes, the same line weight and the same palette across every expression, which is exactly what makes a set feel native to a server. It also forces the decision that single images let you avoid: what does this character do when it is bored, smug, apologetic? Most sets fail because the artist only drew the three easy emotions.

  • Pick the emotional range first — Write the list of feelings before the character. Chat needs reactions: laughter, exasperation, sympathy, smugness, sleep.
  • Lock the design in one panel — Agree on the face, the outline and the palette in the first panel. Every later panel is a variation, not a redesign.
  • Draw for 28 pixels — Test at thumbnail size. If the expression reads only at full size, it is an illustration, not an emote.
  • Crop square, then export — One emote per file, square, centred, with the character filling most of the frame.
  • Name for typing — Short codes: cat_laugh, cat_dead, cat_smug. You will type them hundreds of times.
Sizes that actually get accepted
Discord128 × 128 px, under 256 KB per emoji. Square crop, transparent background if you want it to sit on the message line.
TwitchThree files: 112 × 112, 56 × 56 and 28 × 28. The 28 px version is the one that decides whether the idea survives.
Slack128 × 128 px, under 128 KB. Workspace admins can restrict who uploads custom emoji.
Phone keyboardNot possible. Unicode emoji are assigned by the Unicode Consortium; no tool can add one to your keyboard.

The two limits worth knowing before you start

First, background: a generated sheet is one flat image, not sixteen transparent PNGs. The character comes on a panel with a background; removing it is a separate step — a background remover, or a careful crop with a mask. Second, resolution: a sheet is drawn to be looked at, not to be sliced into 28-pixel files. Downscaling is fine, but a design with thin lines and fine texture will turn to mush. Draw thick shapes with flat colour and the set survives every size.

What a good set looks like

These pieces are not emote packs, but each one demonstrates the same discipline: one character, repeated, with a design that survives scale. Read them as evidence for the rules above.

Sixteen panels, one drawing style

16 Golden Retriever expressions is the clearest example of the rule that matters most: the dog is drawn sixteen times with the same clumsy brush and the same proportions, so the set feels handmade rather than assembled. Zero's Daily — 16 stickers does the harder version — a character with props and a small daily narrative — and still keeps every panel readable at thumbnail size. Notice that the humour comes from the expression, not from detail.

Why the turnaround sheet is the real prerequisite

Orin — design sheet is not an emote sheet, and that is the point: before you draw sixteen moods, you need one face that survives a side view and a three-quarter view. Zero — desktop mascot takes the same character down to a desktop mascot, where the silhouette does all the work. If the character cannot be recognised in a 64-pixel silhouette, no expression will save the emote. Nyx — profile card shows the opposite end: the same discipline applied to a framed portrait, where the border does the work a square crop does in chat.

From sentence to uploadable set

1

Write the character in one line

Species or object, colour, one piece of clothing or prop, and the personality in a word. That line is the anchor for every panel.

2

List eight emotions you will actually use

Skip “happy” and “sad” if you never type them. Pick the reactions your server lives on: laughing, refusing, apologising, dying inside.

3

Generate the sheet, then cut

Generate all sixteen, pick the eight that read best at 28 px, crop each square, remove the background, and export at 128 px. Upload the set and test it in a real chat line.

Reference pieces

Sheet16 Golden Retriever expressions
16 Golden Retriever expressions
Sixteen faces of one dog, drawn in the same clumsy brush. This is the emotional range an emote set needs — not sixteen random images.
SheetZero's Daily — 16 stickers
Zero's Daily — 16 stickers
A character sheet disguised as a sticker sheet: sleeping, eating, sulking. Every panel still reads at thumbnail size.

Turnarounds are the discipline behind good emotes: if a face does not survive a side view, it will not survive 28 pixels.
CharacterZero — desktop mascot
Zero — desktop mascot
One mascot, one silhouette, readable tiny. The same rule decides whether an emote works in a chat line.

Nyx — profile card
A frame around a face. Emotes are the same problem in a square: art, border and a readable expression.

A print piece shows the other end of the scale: the same character, rendered large, still the same silhouette.

Built with the sticker-pack skill

sticker-pack lays out the whole sheet in one pass: it takes the character line and the emotion list, keeps one design across all panels, and returns a single image with sixteen frames. character-sheet is the companion call — use it first when you need a turnaround or a face reference, so the emote sheet starts from a design that already works from more than one angle.

FAQ

Can I add a new emoji to my phone keyboard?
No, and no tool can. Unicode emoji are assigned by the Unicode Consortium; a generated picture stays a picture. What you can do is create a custom emote for Discord, Twitch or Slack, or a sticker for a messaging app that supports sticker import.

What size should a Discord emote be?
128 × 128 pixels and under 256 KB. Square crop, character centred and filling most of the frame. Twitch wants three sizes (112, 56 and 28 px), and the 28 px version is the honest test of the design.

Do I get transparent PNGs?
Not directly. The sheet comes as one flat image with a background, and cutting the character out is a separate step — either a background remover or a manual mask. Budget time for it: sixteen cut-outs is the slowest part of the job.

How many emotions do I need?
Eight is usually enough for a server; sixteen fills a sheet and covers the weird moods. Start with the reactions you actually type, not a generic grid of happy, sad and angry.

Can I use these emotes commercially?
For a personal server or a stream, yes. For a paid pack or merchandise, check the licence of the model that generated the art and avoid designs that copy an existing franchise character.

The faces do not look like the same character. What now?
Narrow the description and add a reference. Keep the palette, the outline weight and one identifying feature (glasses, a bow tie, a scar) in every call, and generate in smaller batches so you can discard the panels that drift.
