Engel FPE: The Student Who Stops the Compass

Engel of Fundamental Paper Education: the feathers, the magnifying glass, the red eye and black ink, and the twenty seconds in Basics in Behavior that define him.

Who Engel is
Engel is a student at Paper School and the deuteragonist of Basics in Behavior, the music video that carried Fundamental Paper Education out of Kaaatie’s uploads and into the fandom’s hands. He is not the protagonist — Claire is — and that is precisely his function. He is the person in the room who notices, who is kind without being asked, and who pays for it. The wiki also notes that he appears in Kaaatie’s other series, which is why his article carries the line “I’ve seen you before…” near the top.
His part in the story is short and almost entirely reactive: a conversation in the hallway, a glance across a classroom, a moment at a fish tank, a walk to the library, and then the twenty seconds that everyone remembers. He stops Miss Circle’s compass as it comes down on Claire, buys her time to run, and is thrown into the wall for it — his right eye turning red and bleeding black ink. Then he sees what is left of her, and the video ends.

Be the one who notices
The roleplay skill plays Engel with the thing that defines him: he sees the paper ball, the wrong door, the friend who is about to be alone — and he acts before he has a plan.
The look, in detail
Engel’s design is built from leftovers that somehow cohere: school uniform, bird, and laboratory. Long messy white hair in a low ponytail, with two feathers — one blue, one reddish-orange — set on the right side of his head. A white collared shirt with two stripes, blue and red, on the left sleeve, over black overalls. His arms are black, ending in four pointed, sharp fingers; he has a small white tail. Blue and red striped leg warmers, black shoes with small heels. In his reference sheet he holds a magnifying glass, which is the most characterful prop in the whole cast: a student whose instinct is to look closer.
- The feathers — One blue, one red-orange, both on the right side. The colour pair repeats on his sleeve stripes and leg warmers — the design rhymes.
- The arms — Black from shoulder to fingertip, four sharp points per hand. It makes every gesture slightly formal, like a drawing of a hand.
- The overalls — Black over a white collar. School clothes, not a costume: he is the most ordinarily dressed character in the video.
- The tail — Small and white, easy to miss. It is the detail that turns him from a boy in an outfit into a bird that has been dressed.
- The magnifying glass — Only in the reference sheet, but it tells you what he does: he is the one who looks, and then says something.
| Hallway | Talking to Bubble at the start of the video. He is already where the trouble will happen. |
| Miss Circle’s class | Glances over in annoyance when Oliver, Zip and Edward throw paper at Claire. He notices first; he just does not act yet. |
| Pool room | Looks into the fish tank, turns and waves at the camera. The one unguarded beat he gets. |
| Library | Shows Claire around, sits and talks with her — then Edward’s drone picks her up and throws her down the pit. |
| The compass | Stops Miss Circle’s weapon as she is about to kill Claire, buying her time to run, and is thrown into the wall for it. |
Personality: kind, and not careful
The wiki’s summary is blunt: a kind and caring person who is willing to go to extreme measures to protect the people he cares about, demonstrated by befriending Claire and then risking his life for her against Miss Circle, Miss Bloomie and Miss Thavel. What is interesting is the shape of that kindness. He is not brave in a loud way — his first reaction to Oliver, Zip and Edward is a glare from across the room, not a confrontation. The courage arrives late, all at once, and it costs him an eye. If you write him, write that arc: patience, then a decision taken too fast to be sensible.

Stories in the same key
Engel’s story is about a student who intervenes in an institution that has already decided the outcome. These six run on that same collision — mostly at school, mostly at night.

Schools, corridors, and one bad decision
Null Field Collective is the closest match in setting: students investigating something the staff would rather they left alone. O.S.F; Dead Road is a corridor with a rule at the end of it, and the walk down it that Engel effectively takes. The Haunted Castle is the building that punishes the person who looks closer, which is his entire character in one sentence.
Politeness as the threat
Just Monika: First Club Day supplies the friendly voice with a rule behind it — the register Miss Circle uses in the classroom scenes. White Elm Sanatorium: Room 17 confines the story to a single room and a single knock, which is roughly what the library becomes. Every Breath You Take is the mirror image of his devotion: affection that takes rather than gives, and never once apologises for it.
Three scenes to open him with
The paper ball
A classroom, a teacher who is not looking, and three students aiming at the new kid. Engel notices first. Decide whether he says anything.
The library detour
You are late, he offers to show you a shortcut through the library, and the floor at the far end is not where it was yesterday.
After the compass
Start after the injury: one red eye, ink on his collar, and a teacher who has already turned back to the lesson. What does he say first?

Built with the roleplay skill
roleplay holds his timing: patient for most of the scene, then suddenly in the way of something much larger than him. It also remembers the injury and the ink, so the consequences do not quietly reset between sessions. character-sheet keeps the feathers, the black arms and the tail consistent, which matters for a design this easy to get wrong.
