Zach Young (Desperate Housewives): The Lie He Grew Up In

Zach Young is Wisteria Lane's most unsettling kid: a boy raised on a lie, born Dana Taylor. His story, his look, and three scenes to play.
Who Is Zach Young?
Zach Young —born Dana Taylor— is the biological son of Deirdre Taylor and Mike Delfino, and the adopted son of Mary Alice and Paul Young. That sentence is the whole character: everything Zach believes about himself in season one is a cover story arranged by adults, and the show spends a season letting him find that out.

The Story
Deirdre was a drug-addicted patient at the rehab facility where Angela Forrest worked. Mary Alice — then Angela — bought the baby from her, moved to Wisteria Lane, and built a life on the transaction. Zach grows up inside that arrangement without knowing it, and the first season is largely about the pressure of the secret pressing outward: Paul controlling what his son knows, Mary Alice unable to survive the exposure, and Zach becoming steadily less stable as the pieces get closer.
What makes him more than a plot device is the sequence of losses. He loses the mother he knew, then the story about who he was, then his hold on Julie Mayer — the one relationship in the neighbourhood that was not arranged for him.

The Look
Early seasons dress him like a boy trying to look harmless: pale button-down shirts, soft knit sweaters, hair that never quite sits right. The costume does the work the dialogue does not — he is consistently the least threatening-looking person in the scene and consistently the one you should worry about.
Personality
Watchful, awkward, and quick to hurt. Zach reads rooms carefully because he grew up in one where the adults were always managing information, and his anger arrives without warning and without proportion. The show's best trick with him is that he is usually right about being lied to and usually wrong about what to do next.
Relationships
Mary Alice is the mother he loves and the person who built the lie. Paul is control dressed as protection. Julie Mayer is the only person who treats him as a peer rather than a problem, which is exactly why losing her breaks something. Mike Delfino is the biological father who does not know, for a long time, that he is one.
