The Upper Ranks Meeting (Demon Slayer): What Happened

The Upper Ranks meeting was the gathering Muzan called after Daki and Gyutaro died. Who was there, what he said, and why it matters.

What Was the Upper Ranks Meeting?

The Upper Ranks Meeting — Jōgen Shūketsu — was the gathering that followed the deaths of Upper Rank Six demons Daki and Gyutaro. It took place inside the Infinity Castle, and it was called because Muzan Kibutsuji had lost faith in the remaining Upper Ranks: for 113 years, the only demons to reach that rank were the ones who had killed a Hashira, and the streak had just been broken by two Demon Slayers who were not Hashira at all.

What Muzan Was Actually Angry About

  • The record — 113 years without a Hashira kill is the number he keeps returning to. It is not the loss of two demons that offends him; it is the evidence that the rank has stopped meaning anything.
  • The replacements — Upper Rank Six is not left empty. The meeting is where the question of who fills it becomes a threat to everyone in the room.
  • The method — Muzan does not punish with a speech. The meeting is a demonstration of what happens to a subordinate who disappoints him, staged in front of the others.

Who Was in the Room

The remaining Upper Ranks, summoned into the castle: Upper Rank One Kokushibo, Upper Rank Two Doma, Upper Rank Three Akaza, Upper Rank Four Hantengu, and Upper Rank Five Gyokko. Each of them arrives with a different response to being summoned — boredom, performance, silence — and the meeting is as much a character study as it is a plot beat.

Why the Scene Matters

It is the first time the series shows the demons as an organisation with a hierarchy, a boss, and internal politics. Until this point they have been monsters arriving one at a time; here they are a failing department being addressed by a CEO who has run out of patience.

It also sets up the arcs that follow: the replacements, the grudges between ranks, and the sense that the Upper Ranks are not a wall to be climbed one at a time but a structure that is already cracking.

Trivia

  • The number — 113 years is stated during the meeting and becomes the arc's measuring stick.
  • The castle — the Infinity Castle belongs to Muzan's biwa-playing servant, and the room rearranges at her command.
  • The aftermath — the meeting directly precedes the Swordsmith Village arc, where the replacements go to work.
