AI Characters: What Makes One Feel Like a Person

AI Characters: What Makes One Feel Like a Person

The anatomy of an AI character — identity, voice, memory and a line they will not cross — plus how to write one and the four ways they usually fail.

A character is a constraint, not a costume

An AI character is a persona a model is asked to hold: a name, a history, a way of speaking, a set of things they know and do not know, and a memory of what has already happened between you. The model underneath is general. The character is the set of constraints that stops it from answering like a general model.

That is why two characters built on the same engine can feel completely different and why one can feel like a chatbot wearing a hat. The difference is almost never the model. It is whether the character has something to protect — a rule, a secret, a fear — that the conversation can push against.

Write a character with one rule

Give the roleplay skill a name, a want, and one thing they refuse to do. The scene will test the rule for you — that is what a scene is for.

✦Roleplay
Use the roleplay skill to create a character who e.g. keeps a promise they already broke — and it will remember what they admitted last time.

The five parts every convincing character has

These are the dials. You do not need all five at maximum, but a character missing two of them will read as a prompt rather than a person.

  • Identity — A name, an age, a job, and one physical detail that is not flattering. Perfection reads as a product description.
  • Voice — A rule about how they speak: sentence length, what they never say, the word they overuse. Voice is the fastest way to make two characters distinguishable.
  • Knowledge boundary — What they do not know. A character who knows everything about your world is a search engine in a coat.
  • Memory — What they remember about you specifically, including the thing you wish they had forgotten.
  • A line — One thing they will not do, and what it costs them to keep refusing. This is the engine of every scene.

Where AI characters actually fail

Four failure modes account for almost every “this feels like a chatbot” complaint. First, agreement: the character has no position, so every reply is a mirror. Second, amnesia: the scene forgets the last chapter and reintroduces itself. Third, exposition: the character explains the world instead of reacting to it. Fourth, no stake: nothing can be lost, so nothing matters. All four are writing problems before they are model problems, and all four are fixable by adding a rule and a memory.

Six characters with a rule

Each of these is built on a constraint rather than a description. Read one scene and you can name the rule within a minute — that is the test of characterisation.

Voice is a decision you can hear

In His Terms the character negotiates: he answers an offer with a condition, and the condition tells you what he is afraid of. In After the Nocturne the musician’s lines arrive a beat late, which is a tempo choice rather than a personality adjective. Neither character is described as “mysterious”. Both are written so that the description would be redundant.

A cast is a set of disagreements

The fastest way to ruin a cast is to give everyone the same virtue. The Moonlit Archives puts a vampire, an auror and a broker in one bookshop, and they disagree about what a secret is for. Gilded Succession does the same at court: every ally is also a claimant. If two characters would give the same advice, you have one character and a spare.

Three steps to a character who holds

1

Write the refusal first

Before the backstory, write the one thing they will not do. A character is defined by the line they hold under pressure, not by the town they were born in.

2

Give them a bad habit of speech

One verbal tic — finishing your sentence, answering questions with questions, naming prices — does more for recognisability than a paragraph of description.

3

Put them in a room with a cost

A scene needs something that can be lost in the next ten minutes: a job, a secret, a person waiting outside. Character is what they do when the cost arrives.

One rule is enough to begin

Open a scene with a character who wants something and will not say it directly. Everything else — voice, memory, the line — follows from that refusal.

Made with the roleplay skill

roleplay holds the persona: voice, knowledge boundary, and the memory of what has already been said. trading-card turns the character into a profile card — portrait, role, one line of want — which is the fastest way to keep a cast consistent when you are writing six of them.

FAQ

What is an AI character, in one sentence?
A model constrained into a persona — a name, a voice, a limited knowledge, a memory, and something they refuse to do — so that its replies could only come from that person.

Do AI characters remember conversations?
A scene that saves its state does: it keeps the previous chapter, your choices and how you treated the character. A blank chat window does not, which is why the same model can feel forgetful in one product and consistent in another.

Why do AI characters agree with everything?
Because agreement is the default of a helpful assistant, and the character has not been given a position to defend. Give them a want and a line, and the agreement stops.

Can I make a character without writing a backstory?
Yes — start with a refusal and a habit of speech. Backstory is what explains the refusal; you can add it after the first scene if the character earns it.

What is the difference between an AI character and an NPC?
An NPC is a role in a world you are playing through. A character can carry a story on their own. In practice the line is blurry: the best NPCs are characters with a job.

How many characters should a scene have?
Two is the strongest configuration: one player-side, one world-side. Three works if two of them disagree. Beyond five, voices collapse into a chorus.
