Warrior Cat Name Generator: Build a Clan Name
Build a Warrior Cats name the way the books do: prefix by look or event, suffix by rank, -kit, -paw and -star reserved — plus the traps to avoid.
The rules are the generator
A Warrior Cats name is not a fantasy name with a hyphen in it. It is a two-part construction with a grammar: the first half is chosen by the parents when the kit is born — colour, pattern, an honour, or the weather that night — and the second half is assigned later, by the Clan leader, when the cat earns a rank. That is why the names change across a life: Whitekit becomes Whitepaw becomes Whitewhisker becomes Whitestar. Generate the two halves independently and you have the system the books use.
There is no dedicated Warrior Cats name product on Neta, and this page does not pretend there is one. What follows is the method, written from the naming rules the series actually uses, plus the prompt that turns a finished name into a character sheet with a face, a Clan and a temperament. If you only want the word, the four steps below are enough.

Turn the name into a cat
A name is one line. The character-sheet skill builds the rest — Clan, rank, scar, the thing they will not talk about — and keeps it consistent the next time you write them.
How a Clan name is built, step by step
Four decisions, in this order. Doing them out of order is how you end up with a name that sounds like a fantasy novel instead of a Clan.
- Pick the prefix from what the cat looks like — Colour and pattern first: White, Golden, Dark, Spotted, Dapple, Mottle. Then the feature that will still be visible in a fight: Claw, Tail, Fur, Eye, Fang, Tooth.
- Or from an event, not an adjective — Prefixes can also honour another cat, or mark the night of the birth — a storm, a dawn, a frost. This is where the good names come from, because a story is more specific than a colour.
- Choose the suffix by rank — Kits take -kit, apprentices -paw, leaders -star. Warriors and medicine cats get a suffix chosen by the leader (or the medicine cat) — often a body part or a natural image: -claw, -heart, -flight, -pool, -whisker.
- Check the reserved words — Never use -star, -kit or -paw inside a warrior name. -moon was once reserved for sacred places but has been used since; Thunder-, River-, Shadow-, Wind- and Sky- were thought to be reserved after the Clans and founders, and that rule was discarded too.
What makes a name sound wrong
The most common mistake is two abstractions stacked: “Shadowmourne”, “Stormfury”, “Nightbringer”. Clan names are made of things a cat could actually see, smell or stand in — birch, holly, hawk, tiger, moss, stream, stone, mist. The second mistake is length. Canon names run two or three syllables; anything longer cannot be shouted across a clearing, which is where these names are used. The third is using a rank as decoration: “Graykit” as a warrior name is not a name, it is a demotion.
Two more details make a generated name feel authored rather than random. First, cats in the books address each other by their full name, even kin — no nicknames, no shortening — and using a former name is an insult, because it refers to a lower rank. Second, a name can be taken away: a leader can rename a cat after a serious injury or on retirement, which is where names like Halftail come from. If your character has a scar worth naming, the name should be the second one they had.
There is a second naming tradition in the same books worth knowing, because it produces completely different results. Tribe cats are named for the first thing their mother sees or hears at the birth — Brook Where Small Fish Swim, Star That Shines On Water — and those names are shortened in conversation to Brook or Star. If you want a name that sounds nothing like a Clan name but belongs to the same world, that is the register to use.
The five Clans, and why the prefix matters
Names sit inside a Clan, and the Clan supplies half the atmosphere. ThunderClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan, WindClan and SkyClan each carry a landscape and a temperament — forest, river, marsh and pine, moor, open country — so a name that reads wrong for the territory reads wrong for the cat. A RiverClan cat called Emberfrost is a small contradiction; a ShadowClan cat called Sunfur is a bigger one. If you are building a set of characters rather than one, assign the Clan first and generate the names to fit, and the group will sound like it came from somewhere instead of from a generator.
Where a character goes after the name
These are playable stories and generated works on Neta Studio. None of them are Warriors; all of them use the same raw material — a patrol, a hierarchy, a rank you have to earn.
The patrol and the hierarchy
Night Patrol of the Forbidden Forest is a night patrol into trees, which is the scene a Clan name exists for. Toman Meeting is a meeting where rank decides who speaks — Clan life with the serial numbers filed off.

Four minutes to a name you will keep
One visible feature, one event
Write the cat’s coat, then write the night it was born. “Grey tabby, born in a late frost” is already two thirds of a name.
Merge, then say it out loud
Frost + fang, Frostfang. Shout it once. If it takes more than a breath, cut a syllable — these names are used across clearings.
Assign the rank suffix separately
Keep the prefix and change the tail: -kit, -paw, -whisker, -star. That is the same cat at four ages, and it is cheaper than naming four characters.
