Kouzuki Sukiyaki (One Piece): Wano’s Hidden Shogun

Kouzuki Sukiyaki (One Piece): Wano’s Hidden Shogun

Kouzuki Sukiyaki ruled Wano, forged two of its great blades, then vanished behind a tengu mask — the shogun who let his own country forget him.

Who Kouzuki Sukiyaki is

Kouzuki Sukiyaki (光月スキヤキ, Kōzuki Sukiyaki) is the former shogun of Wano Country in One Piece: father of Kouzuki Oden, grandfather of the current shogun Momonosuke and of Hiyori, and the man who forged two of the blades the story actually cares about. He is also, for most of his page-time, a hermit in a red tengu mask answering to a different name.

His arc is the rare One Piece story that is about aftermath rather than ambition. He is deposed, imprisoned, escapes, and then does the one thing a rightful ruler is not supposed to do: he stays disappeared. Everything interesting about him happens in the gap between the shogun he was and the old man in Amigasa Village who will not tell his own grandchildren who he is.

Play the man behind the mask

A hermit who knows every blade in the country, a village that has no idea who he is, and a grandson who is now sitting on the throne he lost. The scene writes itself once you put the mask back on.

✦Roleplay
Use the roleplay skill to play a hidden shogun living as e.g. a swordsmith in a mountain village — a forge, a false name, and a child who calls you by it.

The look, in two versions

Sukiyaki is one of the few One Piece characters whose design is a plot device: the version you meet and the version in the flashback are deliberately not recognisable as the same man.

  • As shogun — A large man of slightly above average height, black hair split into three upward tufts with a topknot behind, a small three-pronged beard, a long thin moustache pointing up at each side, and a light-coloured kimono under a dark robe patterned with flowers.
  • As Hitetsu — Wrinkled, with long white hair down his back, a red tengu mask with an extremely long nose that grows and shrinks, and white wing-like ornaments at the sides.
  • The disguise’s clothes — A black jacket with green poofs along the inner edges over a light grey kimono spotted purple at the hem, dark blue puffy trousers and very tall geta.
  • What the mask hides — Not just a face. The nose is the joke and the wall: everyone in Wano has heard of Tenguyama Hitetsu, and nobody looks past the mask to the shogun they buried.
  • The hands — A swordsmith’s hands are the tell. The wiki credits him with the blades, not with the throne, and the smithing is what he keeps doing in hiding.

Personality. The wiki gives us a ruler who was strict and, by its own wording, fair: he disowned and exiled his own son for violent behaviour and called that behaviour demonic, and then rewarded the same son with the title of daimyo when he brought peace to Kuri. That is the whole ethic — a man who governs by consequence and keeps his affection out of the sentence. Shimotsuki Yasuie read it as tough love. The text leaves room for both.

What comes after the deposition is the part worth playing. Sukiyaki escapes, and instead of rallying a rebellion he is ashamed — ashamed enough that the wiki says he considered seppuku, and ashamed enough that after his grandson takes the shogunate back he still does not want to be seen. He refers to his own dead son and his grandchildren with “-sama”, the honorific you use for strangers, specifically so nobody in the room works out who he is. As Hitetsu he is warmer: violently protective of Tama, and gentle with the orphaned Toko, whom he takes to the Fire Festival to cheer her up. The old man is not one personality with a mask on. He is two, and the mask is the honest one.

In the story. Three decades before the present, Sukiyaki is the shogun of Wano. He is deposed and imprisoned by the usurper Kurozumi Orochi, and the country is closed, occupied and slowly poisoned while its legitimate ruler is in a cell. He escapes sometime after Oden’s execution twenty years ago, and does not come back as a shogun. He comes back as Tenguyama Hitetsu, a hermit in Amigasa Village in Kuri, raising a girl called Tama and quietly keeping the skills of a swordsmith alive.

His craft is the thread that pulls him back into the plot. The wiki lists him as a descendant of the legendary swordsmith Kotetsu and a swordsmith by hobby, and credits him with two named blades: Sandai Kitetsu, which ends up in Zoro’s hand, and Ame no Habakiri, which Oden wielded and Momonosuke now carries. When Hiyori entrusts her father’s heirloom to Zoro, it is Hitetsu who explains what the blade is and where it came from. The hermit in the mask is the last person alive who can tell you what your sword means.

After Orochi falls and Momonosuke takes the shogunate, Sukiyaki reveals himself to his family and the retainers — and then chooses to stay hidden from the public, on the condition that he passes his knowledge to his grandson and goes back to seclusion. That is a very unusual ending for a deposed king: not restoration, not execution, a man handing over the family trade and closing the door behind him.

Why the abdication is the story

One Piece is a series about people who refuse to accept the shape of the world, so a character whose defining decision is to accept it stands out. Sukiyaki had a legitimate claim, a grandson on the throne, and retainers who would have followed him. He chose to hand over the knowledge and go back into the hills, because he believed the country was better off without the man who let Orochi take it. That is not weakness in the text; it is the most severe judgement in the arc, and it is aimed at himself. For a roleplay, it gives you a character with nothing to win and everything to explain — which is a much better engine than a claimant with an army.

Stories with the same temperature

Neta Studio stories that share this page’s register: a country after the wrong person held it, a blade with a history, and someone who has to decide whether to be known.

The country, mapped

One Piece Interactive Map puts twenty illustrated One Piece locations on one atlas, Wano included — useful if you want to place a forge, a port and a castle in the same scene. Blood-Oath Golden Crown is the politics half: a court drawn as a web of oaths, which is the machine that removed Sukiyaki in the first place.

Blades that outlive their owners

Substitute Blade is the short version of the idea Sukiyaki embodies: a rescue plot built around what a sword is owed, and a wielder who has to be worth it. Curse-Road is a kingdom after the fall, and Night Over the Isles is the quieter register — an old man in a city that has moved on without him.

Three scenes you can play tonight

1

The blade appraisal

A stranger brings a sword to Amigasa Village and asks what it is. He knows. Naming it would also name himself. Play the conversation where he tells the truth about the blade and lies about the smith.

2

The grandson’s visit

Momonosuke comes to the village as shogun, with retainers, to ask for something. Sukiyaki has to be addressed as Hitetsu by the boy who is technically his ruler and actually his grandson. Play the whole scene without either of them breaking.

3

The night he almost didn’t run

Twenty years ago, in the cell, with the execution already done. Play the hour he decides between seppuku and a mask — and let the answer be the one the wiki gives.

Play the aftermath, not the war

Wano after the Fire Festival is a country with a new shogun, an old one in the hills, and a forge that still works. The roleplay hub keeps the state — who knows the secret, which blade is where, what the village believes.

Built with two skills

roleplay keeps the village, the forge and the secret straight across sessions; character-sheet writes both versions of him down — the shogun in the flowered robe and the hermit behind the nose. Kouzuki Sukiyaki FAQ

Who is Kouzuki Sukiyaki?
The former shogun of Wano Country in One Piece, father of Kouzuki Oden and grandfather of Momonosuke and Hiyori. He was deposed and imprisoned by Kurozumi Orochi about thirty years before the present story.

Who is Tenguyama Hitetsu?
Sukiyaki in hiding. After escaping, he lived as a hermit in Amigasa Village in Kuri under that name, wearing a red tengu mask, and raised Kurozumi Tama as his ward.

Which swords did he forge?
The wiki credits him with Sandai Kitetsu, one of Zoro’s blades, and Ame no Habakiri, which Oden wielded and Momonosuke now carries. He is a descendant of the swordsmith Kotetsu.

Why did he stay hidden after Orochi fell?
Shame. The wiki says he believed he had failed Wano, considered seppuku, and only revealed himself to his family and retainers on the condition that he would pass his knowledge to Momonosuke and return to seclusion.

Is he a fighter?
Not primarily. His page lists craftsmanship first, then physical ability and swordsmanship — he is a smith and a former ruler, not a front-line combatant.

Is this page official?
No. It is a fan-made page on Neta Studio, unaffiliated with the rights holders. The illustrations are original work made for this page.
