Aizetsu (Demon Slayer): Upper Rank Four's Sorrow

Aizetsu is Hantengu's manifestation of sorrow — a spear-wielding clone with a cross-shaped yari. His design, his role, and three scenes.

Who Is Aizetsu?

Aizetsu is one of the emotion-clones manifested by Hantengu, the Upper Rank Four demon of Demon Slayer. Hantengu's Blood Demon Art splits his own feelings into independent bodies: Sekido for anger, Karaku for pleasure, Urogi for joy, Aizetsu for sorrow, and Zohakuten for hatred when the others are forced together. Each clone carries the rank and roughly the strength of an Upper Rank demon, which is why fighting Hantengu means fighting five enemies who share one will.

What Sorrow Fights Like

  • The weapon — A Jūmonji Yari — a cross-shaped spear. Long reach, wide guard, built to keep Demon Slayers at a distance.
  • The role — He is the one who argues, apologizes, and weeps while doing exactly what Sekido orders. In the Swordsmith Village fight he is the clone ordered to split Genya's head after Genya begins reciting the Amida Sutra, and the one who pins Nezuko to a tree.
  • The limit — He has no authority of his own. When Sekido forcibly absorbs the clones to form Zohakuten, Aizetsu protests — and is absorbed anyway.

The Look

A tall young man with a lean, muscular build and long dark spiky hair past his shoulders, with two shoulder-length bangs on each side and two curved bangs on his forehead, all carrying a bluish tinge. Narrow, deep blue eyes with sapphire sclera. Pointed ears and long nails, the standard demon markers. He wears a navy-blue kimono with periwinkle bows and long white tracksuit-like lines running through thin sleeves, black jika-tabi on his feet — and the kanji for sorrow, ai, etched into his tongue.

Personality

He is grief given a body and a spear. Where Sekido shouts and Karaku plays, Aizetsu sighs, apologizes, and explains why the situation is hopeless — then does the worst thing in the room on instruction. The pathos is structural: sorrow in this story is not passive. It is the emotion that keeps working for the person who caused it.

Three Scenes

1

The order

Sekido gives an order Aizetsu does not want to carry out. Play the few seconds before he obeys.

2

The sutra

Genya is reciting, and it is working. Play Aizetsu deciding whether to stop him.

3

Before Zohakuten

The clones are being pulled together. Play Aizetsu's protest — the one nobody listens to.

Relationships

The clones are one person split five ways, so every relationship is internal. Sekido gives orders and absorbs the others when they resist; Karaku and Urogi are the siblings he shares a body with; Hantengu is the wound all of them came out of. Aizetsu's only act of will in the arc is the protest that gets ignored.

Trivia

  • The tongue — The kanji for sorrow is etched into it — the label is literal.
  • Zohakuten's design — The fused form's outfit blends elements from all four clones, including Aizetsu's striped kimono.
  • The absorption — Sekido takes the clones by force, not by agreement.

In the Story

The Swordsmith Village arc is where the clones get their screen time. Hantengu hides, the clones do the killing, and the Demon Slayers spend the fight learning that cutting one body down does not end the threat — it changes which emotion is holding the spear.

Aizetsu's scenes are the quiet ones inside a very loud arc. He is the clone sent to split Genya's head once the boy starts reciting the Amida Sutra, and the one who pins Nezuko to a tree so Sekido can crucify her. Then, when Sekido decides to fuse them all into Zohakuten, Aizetsu objects — and is absorbed anyway. Sorrow in this story does not get a vote; it gets a spear and an order.
