Tengen Uzui (Demon Slayer): The Sound Hashira

Tengen Uzui is Demon Slayer’s Sound Hashira: the shinobi heir, three kunoichi wives, the chained cleavers, and the fight that cost him an arm and an eye.

Who Tengen Uzui is
Tengen Uzui (宇髄 天元, Uzui Tengen) is the Sound Hashira (音柱, Oto Bashira) of the Taisho-era Demon Slayer Corps and the major character of the Entertainment District arc — the one who takes Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke into a Yoshiwara house and comes out of it short an arm and an eye. He is a former shinobi, the last survivor of his family’s training along with one younger brother, and he talks like a man who has decided that being loud is a survival strategy.
His Breathing style is derived from Thunder Breathing and built around sound: concussive movement, explosives, and a sense of hearing sharp enough that he can turn an opponent’s rhythm into something he reads like sheet music. The technique is called Musical Score, and it is the reason a one-armed, poisoned man can still fight an Upper Rank to a standstill. Everything about the character follows from that: he is not the strongest Hashira, he is the one who listens.

Play the Hashira who talks too much
Most roleplay scenes put you in the rookie’s shoes. This one puts you behind the flamboyant cover story: three wives already inside the house, a district that keeps losing slayers, and a demon who has not made a mistake yet.
The look, and what each piece is doing
Tengen is designed to be read at a distance — the wiki describes an outfit that is a modified Corps uniform, not the standard one — and nearly every element carries a piece of his history. If you are writing him, these are the details that keep him recognisable.
- Height and build — Very tall, broad-shouldered and heavily muscled, lightly tanned, with white hair of uneven length: three shorter clumps arch up as bangs, the longest strands fall to his shoulders.
- The head-wrap — A white wrap with a row of three large gemstones across the centre and three smaller stones in a triangle on the far left, with chains of pale blue stones hanging down like tassels.
- The face — Thin dark-fuchsia eyes with a single long lash each, red eye makeup of alternating dots on his left eye, and claret-and-green nail polish on fingers and toes.
- The uniform — A sleeveless dark-turquoise stand-collar jacket with gold buttons and the kanji for “Destroy” on the back, a white belt, tattsuke-hakama tucked into burgundy calf wraps, white zōri and tabi.
- The cleavers — Two oversized Nichirin cleavers, black blades with a wavy amber edge, chained together at the pommels, engraved “Destroyer of Demons”, carried on his back because no sheath fits them.
- After the fight — A long burgundy yukata, an indigo haori, and a dark eyepatch adorned with the remaining gemstones — the costume change is the wiki’s way of writing the injury into the design.
Personality. Tengen is flashy the way a firework is flashy: loud, deliberate, and impossible to ignore. The wiki's own wording is that he needs everything to be flamboyant, that he calls himself the god of flashiness and festivals, and that he openly hates plainness. He tells Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke that he is a god and that if he says they are dogs they are dogs. He is also, on the page, genuinely funny about it, which is why the arrogance reads as performance rather than cruelty.
What sits under the performance is the more useful half for a scene. He is hard on people because his own training was designed to kill him: the shinobi upbringing killed every sibling except one younger brother, who came out of it cold. He is exacting during Hashira Training and insults trainees who cannot survive his stamina work — and he is the same man who tells Hinatsuru she has done her part and to get out of the way, and who praises Makio and Suma by name when they hold their ground. The flashiness is a decision he makes every morning. The care is the thing he will not say out loud.
In the story. He arrives in the Entertainment District arc as the Hashira assigned to a district where slayers keep disappearing, and he arrives undercover: three wives already placed as the house's staff, a cover identity as a customer, and a temper that is not entirely an act when the plan goes wrong. The arc is built so that the flashy man is the one doing the patient work — listening, mapping the house, waiting for the demon to make a mistake.
The fight with Daki and Gyutaro is where the wiki is most specific, and it is worth getting the order right. He decapitates Daki and believes she is not an Upper Rank because it was too easy. Gyutaro poisons him, and he keeps fighting on the strength of his shinobi-trained tolerance. He loses his left hand, and keeps fighting with his complete Musical Score, the technique he built out of his own hearing: he listens until the opponent's movements resolve into a score he can predict and deflect. He cuts off Gyutaro's arm and pins him, and it costs him his left eye. With the poison still circulating he cannot land the finishing blow, and Tanjiro has to.
He survives, and that is the unusual part. He retires instead of dying, permanently disabled, and the wiki notes he is one of only two known Demon Slayers to leave the Corps that way. Afterwards he dresses to match what he lost: a burgundy yukata, an eyepatch set with the remaining gemstones. A Hashira who is alive, out of work, and not entirely at peace with it is a much rarer thing to write than a funeral.
Why the survivor is the interesting version
Demon Slayer runs on casualties, and the Hashira are the ones the story can afford to spend. Tengen is the exception the wiki points at directly: he retires because he is permanently disabled, not because he dies. That gives a roleplay something almost no fight scene has — an afterwards. A man who has been the loudest person in every room has to be quiet in a house where his wives are still working, where the Corps has already reassigned his district, and where the only person who understands what the Musical Score cost him is the brother he has not spoken to in years. Play the fight and you get a set piece. Play the month after and you get a character.

Stories with the same temperature
Neta Studio stories that share this page’s register: an organisation, a night that has to be survived, and someone who has to decide what they are willing to lose.

The same world, one rank down
Final Selection: Night of Wisteria follows a slayer through a night that decides who survives it, which is exactly the pressure Tengen puts on three teenagers in a district. Demon Slayer Interactive Map lays the same era out as an atlas, including the Entertainment District, so you can pick a street before you write a scene in it.
Other organisations with ranks and blades
Substitute Blade turns a rescue into procedure and a deadline — the closest structural cousin to a Corps mission. Jujutsu Kaisen World Portal swaps ranks for grades and keeps the same question of who gets sent, and Ball of Light is the older, kinder version of a party assembled before the night that needs it.
Three scenes you can play tonight
The listening hour
Before the fight, he sits in a room above the house and listens to the building: footsteps, shutters, the one room nobody enters. Play the hour where he builds the map in his head and refuses to explain it to anyone yet.
The wife who improvises
One of the three has broken cover to protect a servant. He has to decide, in front of the others, whether the mission or the person comes first — and then say it in a way that keeps all three of them alive tomorrow.
The month after
The arm is gone, the eye is gone, the Corps has moved on. Someone asks him to train a recruit. Play the first session, where he is exactly as harsh as the wiki says and cannot bring himself to say why.
The cast, briefly

Play the district, not just the duel
The Entertainment District arc is a mission with a cover story, a household of informants, and a demon who is smarter than the briefing. The roleplay hub keeps the mission state — who is inside, what has been heard, which cover is still intact.
Built with two skills
roleplay runs the district and remembers the roster — who is undercover, which room was searched, what he heard at two in the morning; character-sheet writes him down, from the head-wrap to the cleavers to the cost of the Musical Score. Every factual claim here comes from the Kimetsu no Yaiba wiki; the illustrations are original work and this page is not affiliated with the rights holders.
Tengen Uzui FAQ
Who is Tengen Uzui?
The Sound Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and the major character of the Entertainment District arc. He is a former shinobi who leads the mission against Daki and Gyutaro.
Why does he have three wives?
Makio, Suma and Hinatsuru are all kunoichi, and all three are placed inside the district house as staff before the mission begins. The wiki treats the marriage as an arrangement of equals who work together, not as a joke.
What is Sound Breathing?
A Breathing style derived from Thunder Breathing that mimics sound: extreme speed, explosives, and precision built on hearing. Tengen is its only known user.
What is Musical Score?
A technique he developed from his hearing. He listens to an opponent until their movements resolve into a readable score, then predicts and deflects them. He completes it mid-fight against Gyutaro.
